R. E. Blake on NA, YA, & Contemporary Romance

Less Than Nothing, By R. E. Blake

Less Than Nothing, By R. E. Blake

USA Today bestselling author R. E. Blake joins us for a guest post discussing those pesky genre labels. Take it away, R. E. Blake!

New Adult? Young Adult? Contemporary Romance? Coming-of-age?

When I sat down to write the trilogy that turned out to be the Less Than Nothing novels, I had no idea what genre they were going to be. I sort of thought maybe NA, because they’d have some heat to them, there’s a central romantic theme to the story, and they deal with subjects that are more serious than the YA books I’ve read. What ensued has me scratching my head, though, and now I’m not so sure.

The books cover the trials and tribulations of Sage and Derek, two homeless teen street musicians in San Francisco who make a life-altering decision to hitch cross-country and enter a talent contest in New York.

Seems straightforward enough. That’s a road book. Like Huckleberry Finn, or Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, or any number of other road tomes, only with a teen romance as the central driver. Only that’s not how it turned out. The characters took over, and apparently their story wasn’t a road story at all, but rather a love story combined with a coming-of-age saga.

There aren’t a lot of books that feature homeless main characters, much less homeless teens grappling with the demons of their pasts. These are characters with flaws, with depth, with problems and hopes and needs. Who aren’t adults yet, but also aren’t kids – caught in that neverland between responsibility and adolescence, but dealing with the harsh reality of survival on the streets.

Less Than Nothing is a tip of the hat to the Janis Joplin rendition of Me & Bobby McGee. It came on the radio while I was driving, and as I listened to Janis belt it out, I thought, “wow, wouldn’t that be an awesome story – road trip, two young spirits in love, making mistakes, fighting to succeed…” And that’s how the book idea was born.

But how to classify it? It deals with more complex and nuanced subject matter than the usual YA outing, so it’s not really Young Adult. And it’s got some steamy scenes, so it’s spicier than that genre. Which means it’s probably New Adult, but then we have the problem that the protagonists are both teenagers…in what becomes an adventure/romance. And there are no shirtless biker alpha billionaires, so not typical NA fare. So is it contemporary romance? Not really. Is it NA? Not really. Is it YA? Not really.

Whatever it is, it’s getting rave reviews, so maybe the genre isn’t as important as the story. A young girl developing into a self-directed being, on the threshold of adulthood but still possessing adolescent impulses and doubts, which aren’t always logical and can be in conflict with each other while co-existing simultaneously.

Whatever the genre, I’m thrilled at how it turned out. I think it’s a truly original take on the familiar story of boy meets girl. Because it’s about that. And not that. It’s about love, and dreams, and desperation, and possibility, and the hope for redemption, the fear of loss, of betrayal, of being let down and hurt by those who are supposed to protect you, and about overcoming your past to build a brighter future.

Anyhow, if you like stories that are off the beaten path, are quirky, and deal with teens growing into their own skin and discovering what they’re made of, this might be a good choice. If you enjoy love stories in a big, sweeping, complicated sense, with imperfect characters who sometimes behave in frustrating ways – just like real people do – then give this a try.

And if you figure out what the books are, let me know. Because when asked, I’m still uncertain what to say, other than, “You’ve kinda just got to read them to understand.”

About Less Than Nothing:

Sage’s life as a teenage runaway in San Francisco is simple: Snatch a few hours of sleep on park benches and bus stops; dodge perverts, predators, and cops; and make enough as a street musician to eat. But her world flips upside down when she meets Derek – hot, tattooed, and charming, a singer from Seattle whose looks and talent take her breath away.

What begins as a reluctant partnership quickly develops into a cross-country race against time – and awakens a hunger in Sage that’s unfamiliar and exciting.

As they travel from coast to coast, Sage and Derek pursue their dream, only to discover that they can never run far enough to escape the demons from their pasts.

Less Than Nothing is the breakout debut NA novel from USA Today bestseller R.E. Blake that critics are buzzing about and readers can’t put down.

Today on Meet the Author, please join me for an interview with Fantasy Science Fiction Network (FSF Net) member, Regina M. Joseph. Regina stopped by to talk about writing her science fiction and fantasy series, The Alterran Legacy.

Silverberry: Tell us a little about yourself.

Writing fiction is my long-term plan for an encore career, which I’ll launch in full in probably six to eight years. This will follow my lifelong career as a lawyer. I enjoy thinking about how our society is evolving. Law has served as the perfect launch pad for futuristic writing because it’s at the forefront in reacting to changes in society and technology. Naturally, therefore, a theme in my novels is how high technology affects a society and individual liberties.

As for basic facts, I live in a historical neighborhood in Northwest Ohio with my husband. My three grown children live in or near New York City. I make time for exercise, including martial arts and pilates, and community activities. I like classical and new age music, and I play the piano. I like to write fiction sitting near my fountain.

One of the unexpected benefits of starting my fiction project has been meeting so many wonderful indie writers through social media. I hope that we can continue to develop these wonderful contacts!

Silverberry: Me too! What inspired you to write The Alterran Legacy Series?

Having always been an avid reader and a lover of history, I had decided to research far ancient history. I read about everything I could find. Of course, this leads mainly to mythology and speculation about megalithic structures. The bible itself refers to Watchers and Nephilim. Putting it all together, a story began to form that combined mythology and our own upheavals from advanced technology. And so, I thought I’d better write it down.

Silverberry: What does your hero, En.Lil, yearn for?

He wants to recover that which was lost. His home world was a utopia until its atmosphere was destroyed by a solar eruption. Since this occurred while he was on a mission to Earth, he and his fellow colonists are stranded here, facing the extinction of their civilization. And so, he does whatever he must to preserve its memory.

Silverberry: What’s the novel about and who would enjoy it?

The novel series is about the attempt of stranded, alien colonists to survive on Earth. By Book 3, they have been able to reestablish contact with the home world. However, the returning colonists forever change the dynamics back home.

I weave into the story a number of issues facing our own society, as well as metaphysical issues handed down through mythology. Mythology served as my blueprint for how Alterrans would have viewed the world.

So, readers who enjoy thought-provoking and literary works would enjoy my fiction. Although most of my reviews have been wonderful, one reader on Goodreads gave me a 2 star simply because I have some long paragraphs. If you are that type of reader, please don’t read my books.

Silverberry: I guess that reader wouldn’t like Faulkner, or some Hemingway, (who despite having a reputation for short declarative sentences, produced some masterful monster sentences). Go figure! What do you think makes for great fantasy fiction?

High fantasy immerses the reader in an alternate reality in which the reader can imagine how society might have evolved differently. What is the core of human nature? Are we inherently led to desire liberty, or could we just as easily have been enslaved on a mass scale? So, I think great fantasy deals with large moral issues, rather than serving as a basis for a series of battles and quests.

Silverberry: Who are some of your biggest influences as a writer?

I greatly admire the Dune series, Kim Stanley Robinson’s Mars trilogy, Tom Clancy, Philip K. Dick, Andre Norton, George R.R. Martin, and Robert Jordan.

My format was modeled on George R.R. Martin’s Ice and Fire series (before his contract with HBO for Game of Thrones), with some influence by Robert Jordan. In a way, this was a mistake, because some readers have commented that I have too many characters. Martin’s and Jordan’s were more receptive. On the other hand, this format has given me the flexibility to develop many themes and that really is the point of it all.

Silverberry: How do you approach crafting a novel?

I like to write the storyline in my head and then download quickly. Then I spend eons putting more flesh on the bones.

Silverberry: Thanks so much for stopping by! Readers can find out more about you, your books, and where to purchase below!

About the Alterran Legacy Series:

Would you abandon your civilization’s ancient principles to survive on an alien planet?

Blending mythology, advanced technology and political intrigue, the Alterran Legacy Series is a high-action adventure tale. In Book 1, Colony, Earth, the Alterran ruling family of Anu, En.Lil and En.Ki are stranded at their Earthly colony in Albion after a solar eruption pierces their home world’s atmosphere. With their food supplies dwindling, their lives are imperiled after a comet destroys their rejuvenation chamber, unleashing a deadly virus.

Confronting their new mortality, do they calmly accept their fate and permit their revered civilization to slip into oblivion?

Have Frog, Will Travel, by Will Macmillan Jones

Have Frog, Will Travel, by Will Macmillan Jones

Today on Meet the Author, please join me for an interview with Fantasy Science Fiction Network (FSFN) member, Will Macmillan Jones. Will stopped by to talk about writing his hilarious novel, Have Frog, Will Travel.

A. R. Silverberry: Tell us a little about yourself?

Hi, my name’s Will and I’m an authorholic, (a term coined by another writing friend, one M T McGuire. But she didn’t copyright it in time, so I’ve nicked it. There’s a lesson in there, somewhere). It means that I’m so addicted to writing that it would be dangerous to my health to stop me: a fact I frequently pointed out to my ex-wife whenever she wanted me to mow the lawn or take out the trash… Other than that I’m a fifty something single parent, who loves blues, rock, and jazz and watching International Rugby on the TV. I live in Wales, a lovely, green and verdant land full of mystery and magic. I do my best to support our local culture by drinking local beers and shouting loudly at the TV whenever the Rugby is on.

If not watching Rugby, or drinking beer, I’m out walking the hills and fells and peering into caves in the hope of meeting a dragon. Obviously not the ex, I’ve already met her.

A. R. Silverberry: What inspired you to write Have Frog, Will Travel?

Primarily it was the contract to supply another installment in my Banned Underground collection of fantastically funny fantasy books. I’m supposed to write two of these a year, to keep both publisher and public happy. Oh, you meant the subject matter? You should have said so at first. Well, the main character is a witch: she’s supposed to be a good, or white witch, but has a bad temper, a bad attitude, and a bad habit of turning people into frogs for a short spell. (It could be for a longer spell, but she isn’t very tall.) For this book, I wanted to see how she would react to being tempted/blackmailed towards joining the Dark Side, and to see what she really felt about being good. And what being ‘good’ in magic as opposed to being good at magic really meant to her. More importantly, I had a substantial collection of jokes left over from the previous book that I wanted to use up.

A. R. Silverberry: What does your heroine, Grizelda, yearn for?

To be really, really, honest I think she yearns for a better broomstick, and a really high-class pond for her collection of exotic frogs. Did you know that there’s actually a Wolverine frog that can suddenly have claws appear from its joints? It’s true, that is, although sadly (for the girls) it looks nothing like Hugh Jackman. But mostly I think she yearns for me to give her an easier time in the books. That is so not going to happen, but don’t tell her I said that. A week in a pond doesn’t appeal to me.

A. R. Silverberry: What’s the novel about and who would enjoy it?

Of course it’s about a moral dilemma. Or maybe an immoral dilemma? But it’s also about the setting of that dilemma, and the way the various other characters have interacted to set the circumstances for that particular piece of soul searching. After all, no one wakes up one morning and decides to go off for three days to think about their life, do they? Or maybe they do: I normally only do that after a late night snack of cheese and merlot. My rubbish is usually read by those who find that they have looked at life and seen the joke: and like to laugh at the passages where I am trying to point a finger at some of the ironies and idiocies of life around us. After all, when the whole point of living is to die, what else is there to do but laugh at the absurdities we’ve created for ourselves along the way? Like the repair crew holding a birthday party for a well-known pothole in the road. Not telling you what the strippergram they hired did at the party…

A. R. Silverberry: What do you think makes for great fantasy fiction?

That’s a really simple answer: imagination. A good fantasy writer – and I know a few, and have read books by a lot more – has to have a vivid imagination, and a skill with words to bring that imagination glowing white hot to the page. After that, anything is fair game, isn’t it? Imagination should have no limits.

A. R. Silverberry: Who are some of your biggest influences as a writer?

Hahahahaha! You thought I was going to say Tolkien, didn’t you? Oh, wait, I am, actually. But more immediate for me than JRRT come Alan Garner, Robert Rankin, and Sir Terry Pratchett. Alan Garner, author of The Wierdstone of Brisingamen, The Moon of Gomrath, The Owl Service and many others wrote tales aimed first at children: but from such a background of celtic lore that I was blown away when I first read his books. In fact I’m citing him first because it was his work that made me want to start writing. Robert Rankin, owner of a seriously bizarre imagination which should really have a cultural preservation order slapped on it, showed me that fantasy could be about fun instead of just a bunch of seriously muscled blokes (possibly underendowed in other, important, areas and overcompensating) hitting at each other with improbably large swords: and finally Sir Terry has taught me that it is quite possible within a fantasy book to show a great deal of who you really are as a person, as a writer, as a human. I’m going to try that.

A. R. Silverberry: How do you approach crafting a novel?

You think what I do is crafted? Really? The only craft I employ is in convincing my publisher that hidden inside the insane number of gags in each of the books is a plot line. He actually proposed once when we were down the pub together that we should have a competition amongst the readers, with a prize for the first one to spot the plot. Ha ha, I told him. I’m the one who’s supposed to be the comedian, not you. Actually, I can remember the first time I was told I was a comedian. It was my Bank manager when he was looking at my application for a mortgage but I think it still counts.

A. R. Silverberry: What’s ahead for you?!

The next Banned Underground book, due next year and called Working Title (no, really, that’s not the working title, it is called Working Title) is going to touch on another subject that’s quite close to my heart. But I’m not going to tell you what it is, I’d rather you all went out and bought the book and found out that way. I can promise the usual crowd of jokes, puns, slapstick and wit though, as two competing rock n roll bands made up of my fantasy characters go out on tour. Cue for another poor review on Librarything I expect, like the last one – ‘I could not find it funny or believable that the bass player was a dragon. His claws would just get in the way on the frets, I know this because I’m a bass player’… Oh dear. And I’d been worried about stereotyping.

About Have Frog, Will Travel:

“Tolkien meets Spinal Tap!”

More speculative fiction from The Banned Underground collection: in this sixth outing for the series, Grizelda (the off-white witch) is forced to speculate about her future in fiction when the Dark Lord tempts her with his cookies, and then threatens her with eviction from her cottage if she doesn’t join The Dark Side.

Tempted, Grizelda sets off on a journey of self-discovery, but whatever is she likely to find, apart of course from a few frogs?

Is it Good to be Bad? Or is it Bad to be Good? Or could there be a Third Way? Frogs, vampires, and assorted witches and wizards all have a different view on her predicament, and the only certainty is Grizelda’s uncertainty … and the usual stream of gags, one-liners and slapstick jokes provoked by her thoughts on philosophy.

‘Lord Of The Rings as written by a stand up comedian to the soundtrack of Led Zeppelin IV’ said a reviewer on The Guardian’s Books page.

Meet FSF Net Author, Wade Garret

GENESIS: Book One of The Kingdom Come Series, By Wade Garret

GENESIS: Book One of The Kingdom Come Series, By Wade Garret

Today on Meet the Author, please join me for an interview with Fantasy Science Fiction Network (FSFN) member, Wade Garret. Wade stopped by to talk about writing his epic fantasy, GENESIS: Book One of The Kingdom Come Series.

Silverberry: Tell us a little about yourself.

Garret: I’m a joker that dabbles in beers. I’m a tattoo enthusiast who loves comics. I’m a Gray Jedi who works with Paper or Plastic. I’m a curmudgeon outside of my passions. I’m a father to a beautiful baby girl. I’m a husband to an amazing wife. I love long naps on the couch while my convict-of-a-dog sleeps on the rug.

Silverberry: What inspired you to write GENESIS: Book One of The Kingdom Come Series?

Garret: It was never really an inspiration. It was a gradual progression of events that led to the fact this is the only thing I want to do. I’m a storyteller. Part of it started with jokes, old jokes, the ones that take forever and ever to get to the punchline. Later, as I was getting more into F/SF, it moved into mimicking the fantasies I’d come to know and love. Later still, when gaming, often being the DM, I was creating my own stories for others to play in….Do that enough, you eventually have to put it on paper. Boom! You’ve become a writer.

Silverberry: What does your hero, Jak Hartlen, yearn for?

Garret: Jak Hartlen is yearning for two things. The first is understanding the age-old question: Why do bad things happen—more specifically, why did it happen to him? The second part is dealing with the guilt and pain thereafter, but also accepting the duty and responsibility to do something about it…even if Friends become Enemies and Enemies become Friends.

Silverberry: What’s the novel about and who would enjoy it?

Garret: GENESIS is the origin of my Kingdom Come Series. It’s my semi-twisted take on the classic Hero’s Journey woven through a world of Dark Magic, Steam/Dieselpunk technology, sprawling a Middle Eastern setting. If you like the complexity of Dune, the strange familiarity of The Dark Tower Series and the bloody drama found in A Song of Ice and Fire, I think you’ll enjoy it.

Silverberry: What do you think makes for great fantasy fiction?

Garret: Believability. It’s got to be real. Now this doesn’t mean you have to spell-out every detail to make the world so ridged it’s no longer fantastic, but you’ve got to make sure you don’t jump back and forth between rules already constructed—this happens when writers end up in a jamb. Research is key so consequences don’t sneak-up on you.

Silverberry: Who are some of your biggest influences as a writer?

Garret: Every F/SF Author you can possibly name has had some influence on me. To save time I’ve come to stick with the fresh faces I’m reading now: Mark Hodder, Chris Wooding, Daniel Polansky and Mark Lawrence to name a few.

Silverberry: How do you approach crafting a novel?

Garret: Less “craft” more machete. It’s a jungle out there. If/when I outline, I only do so for a chapter or two. Most of my “craft” involves rereading and rereading. Little by little the story becomes clear. The Beginning, Middle and End are always easy, it’s getting from place to place and agreeing with the path traveled that makes it rough going sometimes.

Silverberry: What’s ahead for you?!

Garret: Book Two of The Kingdom Come Series and a collection of Shorts I’m trying to bang out so I can hopefully do something with them. Keep your fingers crossed. With having my first child this year, writing is going to slow down as I learn a new routine.

Synopsis of GENESIS: Book One of The Kingdom Come Series

After a year of laborious solitude and a conflict brought to the doorstep of his father’s house, Jak, a Southlander of meek circumstance, will come to accept the future isn’t set. Through abilities unnerving to any Areht, against enemies rising in every corner of the planet, he’ll be forced to resolve his destiny as One of Five that can change the world. Such selfless transcendence isn’t easy, nor simply the heroic result of dark revelations shielded from him since childhood now exposed; rather, it’s because of what’s undeniable, even to him. As all great forces collect at the spear’s tip, the truth of his purpose and the price of his existence has a cost and there’s no getting around paying it.

“Mexican Radio” Author Jaysen True Blood

Mexican Radio And Other Short Stories, by Jaysen True Blood

Mexican Radio And Other Short Stories, by Jaysen True Blood

Today on Meet the Author, please join me in welcoming Jaysen True Blood, author of Mexican Radio And Other Short Stories, Volumes I and I.

Silverberry: Tell us a little about yourself.

Jaysen True Blood: I grew up in the Midwestern U.S. and have lived here for most of my life, except for brief excursions south to Oklahoma and Alabama which were brief. I grew up in a home where storytelling was a part of everyday life. My dad told many great stories he had been told by my grandfather about WWI and working as a journeyman carpenter. My mother recounted many stories from her life as a ranch hand and migrant worker. Between this and the availability of books, I learned the fine art of storytelling and writing a good story. I have worked at many different jobs in my life, but have only been good at writing and music.

Silverberry: What inspired you the Mexican Radio stories?

Jaysen True Blood: I have many different sources of inspiration. With the westerns, I wanted to revive some old characters from when I was writing serial fiction and ended up writing about some very different characters who fit into the storyline I had already had written. The science fiction all have varying beginnings. Though “Badlands” was written first, I wrote “Burning Sky” at the suggestion of the great Piers Anthony, who was wonderful enough to critique “Badlands”. “Narratives Of A Dry Vampire” (quickly becoming a fan favorite) is a story I wrote in high school which I wrote the second part to in 2012. The title story was a quirky little piece that basically wrote itself.

Silverberry: What do your heroes yearn for?

Jaysen True Blood: Each story’s hero (anti-hero, in certain stories) has a different desire. Bartoq (Narratives) desires to live as a monk, abstaining from blood. Some are out to escape, some to put an end to mysteries, some to stop killers, others to prevent something. Just depends on the story.

Silverberry: What are the stories about and who would enjoy it?

Jaysen True Blood: The collection is a mix of historical fiction, westerns, science fiction, and fantasy with a little suspense, mystery, and horror mixed in. In other words, there is something for everyone in both volumes.

Silverberry: What do you think makes for great fantasy fiction?

Jaysen True Blood: Really, you have to forget the “rules”. Most readers do not realize that there is no “new” fantasy or science fiction storylines or plots. Only “new” settings and characters. Not to mention how the story resolves itself. What some may see as cliché is really integral to the story and no fantasy or science fiction story is really complete with the traditional “clichés” being used in some way. The greatest stories use the same basic plots and storylines in different and unique ways, but they are still the same in set up. As long as the story keeps you engaged as a reader, it is a great story.

Silverberry: Who are some of your biggest influences as a writer?

Jaysen True Blood: Robert E. Howard, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Edgar Allan Poe, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Nathaniel Hawthorne, O. Henry, Dickens, Hemingway.

Silverberry: Nice to find another Howard fan! I read and reread his stories from my teens well into my thirties. How do you approach crafting your work?

Jaysen True Blood: Currently, I tend to post chapter by chapter on my blog. It is helpful in making me actually keep up on the writing.

Silverberry: What’s ahead for you?!

Jaysen True Blood: I have three novellas on the way plus another collection of short stories. The Novellas are: “The Devil” (inspired by the Hoyt Axton song of the same title), “The Faust Syndrome” (A modern version of “Dr. Faustus”), and “Bad Company” (A vampire novella). I also intend to find a way to be released from my publishing contract on my first three books and re-release them myself to make them more affordable.

About Mexican Radio And Other Short Stories, Volumes I and II:

Mexican Radio And Other Short Stories, Volume I:

Westerns: “Going Down In A Blaze Of Glory: Being an outlaw in the old west is hell. But when you are being hunted by the fastest draw in the west who also packs a buffalo gun, it’s worse than hell. “Lay Your Money Down”: Guy Marlowe is a gambler with a few surprises up his sleeves as he is called upon to make a wrong right. About Jaysen True Blood:

Born in 1974, Jaysen True Blood (nee, Jason Peterman) found his calling as a writer in the early 80’s through a couple of grade school assignments. He spent much of the late 80’s and early 90’s writing poetry, song lyrics, and plays, but returned to fiction shortly before graduation. From this period comes two of the many stories in “Mexican Radio”. He drifted from fiction again in the mid-nineties, but returned again in 2003 as a serial fiction writer for an e-zine. When it tried a brief print mag version, he tried his hand as a music, movie, and book reviewer as well as a writing/music journalist. When the magazine folded, he was on his own once more.

In 2007, he collected together seven of his best stories and submitted them to a vanity publisher (which he now regrets) and published his first book, “Seven By Jay”. He followed this with “The Price Of Lust: Book One Of Faces In The Crowd”, his first full length novel, in 2008 and finally “So Here’s To Twilight And Other Poems” in 2010.

He released “Mexican Radio And Other Short Stories” initially as a single book, but it did not sell. He was soon told that the file size was too large and it needed to be reformatted. This resulted in it becoming its current two-volume set, which was resubmitted in May of 2014, though the date on volume I remains the original October, 2013 date or publication.

Jay currently lives by himself in a small town in the Midwest and spends most of his time doing freelance writing jobs or working on his many writing and musical projects.

Meet FSF Net Author, Will Hahn

Strength of Conviction, by Will Hahn

Strength of Conviction, by Will Hahn

Today on Meet the Author, please join me for an interview with Fantasy Science Fiction Network (FSFN) member, Will Hahn. Will stopped by to talk about writing his epic fantasy novel, Strength of Conviction.

Silverberry: Tell us a little about yourself.

Will Hahn: A little! For an epic fantasy guy, how cruel. I was born in the frozen barbarous north, and mistakenly placed with a family of five sisters. But I managed to escape these early challenges, and today I work from home on- naturally- high technology market research. I realized I was a chronicler about six years ago.

Silverberry: You have an enviable background teaching Ancient-Medieval history. How does that find its way into your writing?

Will Hahn: DEEP background! Seems a lifetime ago. Two things- first of all, it gave me some familiarity with what I was looking at in the Lands; things like the difficulties of a poor family making ends meet, the limitations imposed by distance, and of course I was always interested in the conduct of battles where melee weapons and horse-soldiers were so important. So it allowed me to understand more, from the beginning. But I also think that the activity of teaching got me thinking about telling good stories, trying to engage someone’s attention and show them the meaning behind events, especially how one person can have an important impact if they make the right decision. Everywhere I look I see people with choices to make.

Silverberry: What inspired you to write Judgement’s Tale?

Will Hahn: I won’t lie. He did: Solemn Judgement is the main character of the current saga, and I saw him right from the very beginning, before I ever saw the Lands of Hope or knew that I could chronicle his adventures there. How long ago? Let’s see- eight-track tapes were hot, disco was still happening. And Star Wars wasn’t. But as for “inspiration”, you have to know him to understand. Not much for talking, but the man is relentless.

Silverberry: What Solemn Judgement yearn for?

Will Hahn: Judgement knows he’ll never find out why his father had to flee with him when he was only 12. He doesn’t have any clue why the ocean journey took more than two years, or why his father taught him all day every single day during that time. But he is in the Lands of Hope now, and his father died to get him here safely. So Judgement wants to know his purpose, what his father intended and how he can live up to it. He especially wonders if death is the true end of life, for obvious reasons.

Silverberry: What’s the novel about and who would enjoy it?

Will Hahn: Judgement’s Tale, a story in four novellas coming out this year, concerns the end of the Age of Peace in the Lands of Hope. Several events, among them the arrival of this grey-clad youth, trigger the beginning of the Age of Adventure. I think classic epic fantasy fans would have a good time with this yarn.

Silverberry: What do you think makes for great fantasy fiction?

Will Hahn: If you see characters and situations that are far removed from what you think of as reality, but you still sympathize with the heroes and feel you would have done the same, you’re in the hands of an expert.

Silverberry: Who are some of your biggest influences as a writer?

Will Hahn: I’m from that first generation to really love JRR Tolkien, and I would also cite Ursula LeGuin and Stephen R. Donaldson as truly great authors of the heroic and epic fantasy genre.

Silverberry: How do you approach crafting a novel?

Will Hahn: Um, no. I’m not a writer, merely a chronicler. I’ve been watching the Lands of Hope for over thirty years, and most of that time never dreamed I’d be jotting it down in narrative format. Something happened to convince me otherwise on June 21-23 2008, and now I find myself with stacks of notes and other accoutrements and suddenly charged with getting it all down before the end of me. I know now, how Thucydides must have felt. There’s no end of material, but my ability to change it is zero.

Silverberry: What’s ahead for you?!

Will Hahn: Now that Judgement’s Tale Part One, “Games of Chance” has been released, I’m looking forward to Part Two, “Strength of Conviction”, coming September 28th. The next two parts of Judgement’s Tale arrive in 2015, followed by “The Eye of Kog”. I also am working on the third installment of my Shards of Light series, entitled “Perilous Embraces”. So much history yet to record!

Synopsis of Strength of Conviction – Judgement’s Tale Part Two:

As the central kingdom of the Lands of Hope languishes without rule or reason under a worsening pall of chaos, most Children of Hope stand by and do nothing. The few who would dare are outcasts, strangers, too high up, or too far inside, or still too young to help easily. Worse, all their scattered mysteries seem unconnected.

Treaman the Woodsman struggles to guide his companions through ensorcelled wildlands to safety. The poorest knight in the city prays by Conar’s statue for weeks without ceasing, as though his life depends on it. The young scribe Anteris copies histories for his master by day, dreams of adventure till sunset, and searches the stars by night for the riddle of his future. A noble Conarian heir seeks to join a lost legendary Order, putting his duty before his life. A gentle Elvish sage confronts the greatest of puzzles, the closed door barring the way to friendship with his greatest, and most dangerous pupil.

For Solemn Judgement, the Man in Grey, is learning that names are indeed important when he shows … Strength of Conviction.

About Will Hahn:

Will Hahn has been in love with heroic tales since age four, when his father read him the Lays of Ancient Rome and the Tales of King Arthur. He taught Ancient-Medieval History for years, but the line between this world and others has always been thin; the far reaches of fantasy, like the distant past, still bring him face to face with people like us, who have choices to make.

Will didn’t always make the right choices when he was young. Any stick or vaguely-stick-like object became a sword in his hands, to the great dismay of his five sisters. Everyone survived, in part by virtue of a rule forbidding him from handling umbrellas, ski poles, curtain rods and more.

Will has written about the Lands of Hope since his college days (which by now are also part of ancient history). You can find a free Compendium of information about the Lands, including maps of the Lands, on his website at www.WilliamLHahn.com).

Entertaining Angels: Emerald Barnes

Entertaining Angels Tour Banner

I’m thrilled to have author Emerald Barnes back to discuss her new novel, Entertaining Angels. The novel deals with some heartfelt issues, and I was especially interested in asking Emerald about that. Join me in welcoming Emerald Barnes!

Silverberry: You drew a lot on your own experience in writing Entertaining Angels. Would you be willing to share some of them?

Barnes: I did, yes, and I think that’s what makes the story so relatable. I was picked on for being overweight. It wasn’t to the same extreme that Madison is, but I knew how that felt. So, I pulled from it and used it as inner thoughts and feelings for her. My best friends were skinner than I was in high school, and it was always so hard to see the guys want them and never want me, especially when it was someone I had a crush on. I loved my best friends, but they never really understood what I was feeling. I didn’t have anyone but my sister and cousin who were also a bit overweight. So, we’d talk and hang out, but when others don’t realize what we go through, it hurts. I used every bit of those feelings and directed them towards Madison. That’s why I think that my own experiences at being overweight really brings in my readers being able to relate to the feeling that Madison has, or if they can’t relate personally, they’ll understand what it feels like to be an overweight teen/adult.

Silverberry: What do you think it says about society as a whole that we focus on “skin deep”?

Barnes: I’m not sure exactly what it says about our society, but I do know that it’s not right. Beauty isn’t skin deep. There is so much more to beauty than being a size 0 and tan. I’m neither, but I also realize that I’m beautiful. I may not be a magazine’s standard of beauty, but when it boils down to it, nor are the models. They’re photoshopped, and we have this askew version that we need to look like that. I just want people to see that no matter what they look like, they’re beautiful. I want them to embrace themselves and love themselves. It doesn’t matter what others think. I can never change a society, but if the message gets across somehow, maybe we can start taking that “skin deep” attitude and start seeing beneath the skin, start looking at souls and realize that we’re all beautiful.

Silverberry: As I work on my current novel, I’ve begun to realize that just as my characters have an arc, I’m also having one, that I’m on a path toward greater wholeness. I wondered if writing the book provided something like that for you, a healing or catharsis.

Barnes: It did. Entertaining Angels was a way for me to heal as much as it was for me to bare my soul. I have spent many years damaged because of how being fat is seen as being a bad, grotesque thing when it’s not. I’m not going to get on the healthy vs. non-healthy debate about being overweight. What I am going to say is that, no matter how it happened, being fat doesn’t make one grotesque or different or ugly, and I’ve been a victim of feeling like that because others have made me feel that way. So, it’s been more, I guess, of a way for me to heal by sharing my feelings, but mostly, it’s been about me trying to help others get past their feelings of inadequacy.

Silverberry: How did you go about creating the story’s characters? How much did you draw from real experiences and people you’ve encountered?

Barnes: As far as creating my story’s characters, I sat back, and I thought about what the most extreme thing was that could happen for an overweight teen, and I made it scarier. I needed it to be scary because people need to see how dangerous it is to hate yourself. I drew a lot from real life experiences. As I mentioned in some previous questions, this is basically my life’s story you’re reading minus a few details. So, I took what I knew from my life and what I’ve seen and the people I know, and I wrote a story that would touch those who have been victims of bullies and know what it feels like because this happens more than what we realize.

Silverberry: What does your heroine, Madison, yearn for?

Barnes: Madison yearns for a normal life. She thinks that she’s not good enough, pretty enough, or skinny enough, and she wants to do everything that she can to become a “normal” teen, but she also craves love. She wants to be loved more than anything else in her life.

Silverberry: Your titles are always so intriguing. Where did this one come from?

Barnes: Thank you! Most of them are always so hard for me to think of! There’s a Bible verse, Hebrews 13:2, that says, “Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” As I was reading that and thinking about my novel as a whole, the “entertained angels unawares” became Entertaining Angels.

Silverberry: That biblical connection is absolutely beautiful. What did you learn from writing this particular book that might help other writers?

Barnes: Don’t be scared to lay your emotions on the line. It’s the scariest thing you’ll ever do, but the raw emotions are what make it so relatable. People have told me that they could relate to Mads because they went through the same thing. I just urge writers not to be scared to write something they want to write because it hurts. Hurting is probably one of the strongest motivators there is to help you share your story.

Thanks so much for stopping by, Emerald! Readers can learn more about you and purchase Entertaining Angels with the links below! But first, here’s the Synopsis!

Synopsis

Madison Andrews can’t face her reflection in the mirror.  All she sees is a big, fat nobody.  Yet, deep inside she longs for something more, something that’s not skin deep.

Along comes Zach, the new guy in school.  He’s smoking hot and totally out of her league.  She somehow catches his eye, and he makes her feel beautiful for once.  But just as she gets close to Zach, her nerdy best friend, Chase, won’t let Madison doubt her true beauty, no matter how many meals she skips.

Even as Madison begins to realize that she is more than what she thinks, darker forces are at work, darker than the lies and mocking from her peers, stopping her from amounting to her full potential.  Can Madison find true happiness in her own skin?

Meet FSF Net Author, Lynette White

The Enemy Within, by Lynette White

The Enemy Within, by Lynette White

Today on Meet the Author, please join me for an interview with Fantasy Science Fiction Network (FSFN) member, Lynette White. Lynette stopped by to talk about writing her fantasy novel, The Enemy Within.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I grew up in Central Montana and as such I had a lot of time to read books. By the late 70’s I joined the D&D craze and was introduced to Tracy Hickman and Margret Weiss. Fantasy was my new love. An English teacher in high school was the first person to tell me I had a gift for writing. Three decades came and went before I seriously considered writing. Though I primarily write fantasy, I have dabbled in fiction, historical fiction, science fiction, short plays, and have even written lyrics for a song. I have two sons who are very active in the world of Professional BBQ. They are both married and I have been blessed with three beautiful granddaughters.

What inspired you to write The Enemy Within?

Funny story about that. As I mentioned above I was a willing participant in the D&D craze and later AD&D. The characters, world, and concept behind The Enemy Within are the result of my years as a gamer. A few years ago I decided to retire my world and the characters from active gaming. It was a natural transition from the gaming table to the published novel. The story behind the Destiny Series was never a part of the game, but the readers will pick out the common threads.

What does your hero, Shadoe Van Ives, yearn for?

Shadoe’s initial driving force is justice. What he struggles with is what form of justice. Does he exact swift street justice to rid himself of the problem, or the slower legal justice for the sake of all the innocent victims. As the death toll rises, and the threat against the Twin Cities becomes more dangerous, Shadoe realizes justice is no longer his concern. Somehow, he must survive long enough to save the cities from complete destruction.

What’s the novel about and who would enjoy it?

The Enemy Within is a fast-paced story. As Shadoe unravels a conspiracy so dark that it threatens to destroy the very fabric of his world, he fights with his own demons. When he can no longer trust the people around him, he turns to those who are the most loyal to him. The twist is Shadoe’s power in two opposing worlds and how that power places him in the perfect position to be the hero.

If you are looking for a story with clear-cut heroes and villains this is not the story for you. This is a story about human nature and how justification of actions are easier in the gray zone. Illusion plays a big part in this story as the main characters carefully build two sides of their lives. One the world sees, and one that remains hidden in the shadows. Readers who like quick twists to the story will enjoy this series. Just when you think you have the story figured out I promise everything will take an abrupt turn.

What do you think makes for great fantasy fiction?

Fantasy readers are unique in that they want to be drawn into another world and enjoy every facet of it. They want to experience the world through the eyes of the characters. They want to share the character’s pain, relish the hero’s success, mingle with the odd races, and treasure the journey through an unknown world. As authors we need to provide that experience or our books will end up as doorstops.

Who are some of your biggest influences as a writer?

Without question Tracy Hickman and Margret Weiss. However, I am also a big fan of Raymond Feist Rita Mae Brown, Sidney Sheldon, and even Agatha Christie.

How do you approach crafting a novel?

First I formulate a basic storyline, decide on the theme, and then create the characters. Once I have the basic bone structure I go from there by creating through lines, the sub stories, etc.

What’s ahead for you?

I am currently working on book two of the Destiny Series, Enemy Unmasked. I am also still active in the linkedin group 750 Writers group. That group is planning to publish four more books by the end of the year, making it twelve books to my credit. I am planning to release Enemy Unmasked by early 2015 and the third book in the series Darkest Night by this time next year.

Synopsis of The Enemy Within:

Betrayal and murder are on the agenda and the battle lines are lost in the haze. Two cities stand on the brink of destruction and one man can stop it. Salaria Second Commander Shadoe Van Ives is no stranger to having enemies, but when he realizes that one of his nearest has betrayed him, he no longer knows who he can trust. Yet he must find someone before the Twin Cities are destroyed.

The Dark Ones, by Emma Lynn

The Dark Ones, by Emma Lynn

Today on Meet the Author, please join me for an interview with Fantasy Science Fiction Network (FSFN) member, Emma Lynn. Emma has stopped by to talk about writing her fantasy novel, The Dark Ones.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a 17-year-old homeschooler who likes to read. Writing later became a passion of mine when I wrote a short story for a contest. I love taking pictures and it’s always been a dream of mine to travel the world with my Cannon camera in hand.

What inspired you to write The Dark Ones?

I had a dream one night—it was a vague one—about these dark creatures that came down from the sky. I didn’t really understand what was happening in the dream but when I woke up, the idea was stuck and I decided to write it down. I didn’t have a clue about where it would go but I sat down for hours planning it all out.

What does your heroine, Isla, yearn for?

Isla was a hard character to describe, personality wise. She was strong and determined, yet innocent and naïve. What she really wanted out of her life was for her loved ones to be safe and like everybody, she wanted to be loved.

What’s the novel about and who would enjoy it?

The Dark Ones is set in the future, after the world had been poisoned by the dark figures that took over the government. Isla and many others live in a cave that’s underground, trying to stay safe from the Dark Ones that are outside the cave. This story is geared more toward Young Adult.

What do you think makes for great fantasy fiction?

A great idea. Fantasy has the core characteristics being angels, demons, witches, maybe mermaids. With those, you have to have an amazing idea to keep the story afloat.

Who are some of your biggest influences as a writer?

My sister. She’s the one who told me to keep writing, especially on those days when I just wanted to give up writing. We always encourage each other to keep writing and help each other out with plots.

How do you approach crafting a novel?

I first write out what’s happening in the story. I write the plot line and the most important things that will happen in the story. I then grab a notebook and write out a general take on what will happen in each chapter. From there, I write!

What’s ahead for you?!

I’m currently working on two series! One will focus on a different person each story, each being part of the same band. So the characters are linked together. The second series I’ve started is set after World War III.

Please return the questions with the following all in one Word doc, except the cover, of course, will be separate!

Synopsis of The Dark Ones:

The ones that destroyed our world.

The year is 2321 and the world is not how they thought it would be. There is no flying cars, any robot butlers, or hover skateboards. What there is though . . . is black.

The world was attacked over a hundred years ago by what they call the Dark Ones. Human bodies with coal-black sharp wings. They destroyed the world.

Isla lives underground with other people like her. They have lived with their own laws for many years but as trouble happens inside their home, the outside isn’t all of their worries. Follow Isla’s story of horror, truths and romance in The Dark Ones.

Emma Lynn is an avid reader and loves books with clichés. She hasn’t been writing long, but she has a couple of short stories and The Dark Ones is her first full length book.
